Edward John Smith was born today at Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

Son of a potter, Smith entered the merchant marine in February 1867 as an apprentice in the sailing vessel Senator Weber.

Always lucky, popular with employers and passengers alike, Smith eventually rose to the become the most highly paid and respected merchant seaman in the service. He was appointed to the command of Titanic in 1912.
