Today, the Royal & United States Mail Steamer Titanic left Southampton’s White Star Dock shortly after midday on her maiden voyage to New York via Cherbourg and Queenstown. Her commander was Captain Edward J. Smith, RNR.

Onboard were an estimated 1,846 persons. Titanic’s Passenger Certificate certified the vessel to carry a maximum of 905 1st, 564 2nd and 1,134 3rd Class passengers with 944 officers and crew, a total of 3,547 persons.
