Titanic Belfast in partnership with leading charity, MindWise, hosted a World Mental Health Day event for employers across Northern Ireland to highlight the theme 'Mental Health in the Workplace'.

The event, which was hosted today, Tuesday 10 October 2017, to mark World Mental Health Day equipped employers with the skills and knowledge to support positive wellbeing within the workplace.

With over sixty businesses and organisations in attendance, it broke down barriers surrounding mental health in the workplace, which has often been shrouded in secrecy, fear, ignorance and discrimination by encouraging businesses to proactively engage with mental wellbeing.

Edward Gorringe, MindWise Chief Executive, said “At MindWise, we work to support those at risk of, and affected by, severe mental illness and mental health difficulties and that includes in the workplace. In today's economic climate the increasing cost of sickness absence brings an additional pressure to businesses and organisations. The Work Foundation report that in 2014 over 15 million working days were lost to depression, stress and anxiety in the UK, an increase of 24% since 2009. The event aimed to encourage employers to actively engage with mental wellbeing and reap the benefits which range from employee attendance and retention, to motivation and engagement, as well as increased competitiveness. We were delighted to see so much support from local businesses on World Mental Health Day.”

The special event was hosted by Titanic Belfast as part of its commitment to highlight access in its many forms and encourage industry improvements.

Titanic Belfast’s Director of Operations, Judith Owens, commented, “We were delighted to partner with and host the MindWise event, which saw sixty companies and organisations from across Northern Ireland join together to mark World Mental Health Day. As one of the UK’s most accessible attractions, we are also committed to ensuring access to employment and value our staff as one of our key assets. The MindWise event provided us with a very informative insight into mental wellbeing in the workplace, the impact it has as well as the support available. We are very proud to have supported this event.”

Titanic Belfast, voted as the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, also boosts of an Investor in People accreditation, which is acknowledged UK-wide as the most successful framework for business improvement through people.
