On 1 September 1985, more than two miles beneath the North Atlantic, the world’s most famous shipwreck was finally found. Titanic had lain undiscovered for 73 years, her location a mystery, her final moments debated, her story incomplete.

The discovery was led by Dr. Robert Ballard with a joint team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (USA) and the French oceanographic institute IFREMER. But this was no ordinary expedition…

In this exhibition, discover his daring quest, revealing the science, mystery and relentless pursuit behind the discovery.

We take a closer look at the man behind the mission and his relentless pursuit of underwater exploration. Visitors can also follow Robert Ballard’s remarkable journey to finding Titanic. Many had searched and failed, until its discovery in 1985, a moment that continues to capture imaginations today.

The discovery of RMS Titanic is just one chapter in Ballard's illustrious career. He has also located other significant shipwrecks, which you can explore in the exhibition.

The Flag that saw Titanic

This weathered cloth is no ordinary flag. It flew on board the 1985 expedition that found Titanic. But its story begins almost a decade earlier, on the misty shores of Loch Ness.

In 1976, a National Geographic team including Robert Ballard, Emory Kristof, Ralph White, and David Doubilet set out to film the Loch Ness Monster. They didn’t find a monster, but they found something else. The hook they dreamed up? Find the Titanic.

Come see this remarkable flag up close, a true witness to history, on display for a limited time.
